Italy is one of our favourite European destination to visit. After travelling to Tuscany (and other popular places in the south) dozens of times, we were happy to finally return to the northern part of Italy – this time the Dolomites.
Terry and Ray, two beautiful souls from Australia and New Zealand, have invited us along. They recently got engaged and wanted to celebrate their love with an engagement photoshoot in a spectacular location. We had an incredible time exploring together and their chemistry is inspiring. They are incredibly sweet and sincere, so it was a joy to be able to capture them in this spectacular landscape.

For all Instagram fans, this is a place you have for sure seen before. Lago di Braies has been posted on Instagram millions of times and it’s probably one of the most famous and popular tourist destinations in the Dolomites right now.
Why? Well, the main reason has to be the simple fact that it’s beautiful. The green water, the reflexions of the mountains and the boat house all make a perfect match, where you can just stop and stare.
Lago di Braies is also very easy to reach. There is no hiking required, you just drive up to the spot and a huge parking lot is also available. One thing you should consider before visiting the lake is the crowds. Since the lake became very popular, it can be packed with visitors, so make sure to arrive there early in the morning (preferably before the sunrise). Or make it a unique experience and stay at the Hotel Lago di Braies and enjoy the a sunset and sunrise view straight from the comfort of your bed.
But don’t let the crowds scare you away. You can enjoy a private, serene moment by yourself, if you rent out the boat house on the lake (available to rent in the mornings before it opens to public). This is also a great place to have your intimate wedding ceremony and a smaller group of guests. Contact La Palafitta for more information and bookings.
When to Go?
The Dolomites are a great place to explore in any season. Winters and springs offer a ton of snow so you can enjoy some time skiing. Summers and winters are great for you if you like hiking, gorgeous views and amazing colors. Keep in mind that winters and summers are the most popular times. So if you would like to avoid the crowds, choose spring or fall.
Where to Stay in the Dolomites
You have so much to choose from! From alpine hotels to private chalets in the mountains and cozy airbnbs, it’s really up to you. One thing you should know is that some hotels close during the low season, so your choice could be limited if you travel there in the fall.

Would you like to explore some other locations in the Dolomites? Lago di Braies is probably not for everyone, so we’ve gathered a list of our favourite locations that we feel are worthy of your consideration.
Tre Cime di Lavaredo
“The Tre Cime di Lavaredo (‘Three Peaks of Lavaredo’ in English or also known as ‘Drei Zinnen’) is one of the most famous places in the Dolomites. The three peaks are a part of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage since 2009 and belong to the European network of nature reserves Natura 2000.
Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm)
“The Alpe di Siusi” is another place that is a ‘must visit’ place. It’s about a 2,5 hour drive from the Tre Cime / Lago di Braies area. It offers amazing views on the mountains Sassolungo and Sassopiatto.
Cinque TorriÂ
This one is quite easy to reach, just a quick drive from Cortina d’Ampezzo and then with an easy 30 minute hike. Cinque Torri is not as popular as other locations, so there is a good chance you could have it all by yourself early in the morning. But our favourite time to visit the place and have an elopement ceremony or a photo session would be at sunset, when the warm orange light will cover the towers.
St. Magdalena and St. Johann Church
This place is breathtaking. The beautiful village of St. Magdalena, located in the western part of the Dolomites region, lies below the mountain peaks. The whole scenery is picture-perfect and is a great option for a wedding, elopement or a photo shoot. One of the cutest church nearby is St. Johann Church. No matter if you are planning to have a church ceremony or not, this is one of the “must visit” places, when you are in the Dolomites.
Prato Piazza
One of the lesser known places is Prato Piazza, which is just a short drive away from Lago di Braies. It offers some amazing views over the mountans and great walking paths.
“Katja and Simon were so easy to work with from the very first moment we reached out to them through email, Skype and also in person. They were very professional yet extremely personable which was so important to us as it made us feel very comfortable in front of the camera.
We couldn’t have asked for a better experience for our location photoshoot.
We are beyond happy with the quality of our photos which we can’t stop looking through and we have received so much positive feedback from our friends and family.
We would confidently recommend Katja & Simon Photography to all!!“
