When we first got the email from Marta and Oliver, we had no idea what and where Matera is. The first thing we did is google the name to see some photos, and wow! We were so surprised. We knew about this extraordinary ancient town somewhere in the south of Italy, we just never remembered the name. So there we were, sitting behind our computer, with our jaws open and just thinking about what this wedding would look like.
Marta and Oliver come from different countries in Europe, but now live in New York. So when they decided it’s time to tie the knot, they already knew they want to do it somewhere abroad. Everybody would have to travel anyways, so why not pick a fun, somewhat remote location. Somewhere where nobody has every been! If you would met them in person, you would only need 5 minutes to see how fun, relaxed and spontaneous they are. It’s no surprise that they closed their eyes and pointed their fingers randomly somewhere on a map. And it was this place – Matera!
The city of caves
Matera’s old part, also called Sassi, is considered one of the oldest towns in the world and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The narrow streets and houses build in front of caves were the perfect set for famous movies such as The Passion of the Christ by Mel Gibson, The Omen and even Wonder Woman. And when we got lost in the maze of narrow streets and stairs, it really did feel like being in a movie.

Marta and Oliver have been planning their wedding with the help of a local planner. They chose the Altereno Cafe at the edge of the Sassi wall. The cafe faces the neighbour hill where you can still see and explore old caves, where the ancestors lived almost 9.000 years ago. What they didn’t know (and learned just before they entered the venue for the ceremony) is that the cafe is located in the ruins of an old church. The owners did some research and learned, the last wedding to take place there was 400 years ago. We all felt even more humbled and blessed to have been able to stand there and enjoy the beautiful ceremony and the love these two souls have for each other.
“Katja & Simon,
We can not say thank you enough for being a part of our incredible day and capturing each moment so perfectly. These photos are unlike anything Ollie and I could have imagined. They capture the essence and beauty of Matera perfectly.
Most importantly, you managed to capture the love that we have for each other and the people in our lives. In the most natural way imaginable. I never thought that possible in photos, until we saw yours.”
