We travel around the world to capture beautiful wedding stories. And we are happy that you are here. Why? Well first, because Slovenia is a beautiful country, and second, because it's our home.
Slovenia is a scenic country with a fantastic location, right in the heart of Europe. It’s easily accessible from the neighbour countries: Italy, Austria and Croatia. Therefore planning your trip to Slovenia should be an easy task. Although Slovenia is a really small country, it is very diverse and offers a lot of spectacular places, that would make a perfect backdrop for your wedding in Slovenia.
Top places to consider when you plan where to get married in Slovenia.
1. LAKE BLED
Among hundreds of lakes in Slovenia, Lake Bled is for sure one of the most beautiful places. It’s also the #1 tourist attraction in Slovenia, so it’s often packed with tourists. But the lake is big enough and if you’re not afraid of a little bit of walking, it is possible to find a nice quiet spot for your vow exchange.
Lake Bled is famous for its island in the middle: you can hire a “pletna” boat to take you to the island, where you need to climb the 100 stairs (the tradition is that the groom has to carry the bride all the way to the top). It’s possible to get married in the Church of the Mother of God, where you will ring the wishing bell after the ceremony.
And if you prefer views from above, visit the Bled Castle, explore the history and enjoy the best view of the lake. Below you can find some amazing hotels in the area:
2. LAKE BOHINJ
About 20 km further into the Triglav National Park you will find Lake Bohinj. This one is more for nature lovers, as it sits surrounded with mountains. And the good news is, it is much less crowded than Lake Bled. Bohinj is the perfect base point for some great hiking trails, including Vogel, Chapel Uskovnica,…
3. kranjska gora & lake jasna
If you’re more into hiking, then having a small wedding at the top of the Mangart mountain would be a great choice. Mangart is accessible with a car (there is an extra entrance fee for cars), but for the best views you still have to do a bit of hiking. It’s all worth it though, because the sunset view is fantastic.
5. trenta valley & kekčeva domačija
Kekčeva domačija was the setting for a legendary Slovenian movie called Kekec. Today the homestead is a boutique hotel, where you can stay in a private cottage, and host a small wedding or elopement. The owners of the homestead can also cover your catering and you should go for it, because the food is fantastic!
6. LOGAR VALLEY
Just one more spectacular view over the Alps for you – visit the Logar Valley. This hidden gem is great for those who prefer to stay at the base or hike around. Enjoy a swim with a view at Hotel Plesnik, or if you feel more adventurous visit the Farm Klemensek on top of the mountain for a more rustic experience.
7. ljubljana - the capital city
One of the best-kept secret in Europe is the charming city of Ljubljana. Wander around in the picturesque cobbled streets and enjoy your coffee on the banks of Ljubljanica river. Climb to the Ljubljana Castle for scenic views of the city and beyond or choose a different perspective and go for a boat ride on Ljubljanica river.
Štanjel is a tiny town in the Karst region (about 20 min from the border to Italy), famous for it’s stone houses, tiny streets and the beautiful Ferrari Garden. The whole Karst region is the home of great wines and prosciutto, so you can be sure you won’t be starving.
Sitting within medieval walls, Piran is an old port town by the Slovenian coast. You can get a bit lost in the narrow streets, or hike up to the church on top of the hill to enjoy a beautiful view over the sea.
There are many great places to stay in Piran, but these two are our favourite:
10. CASTLE OTOČEC
One of our favourite castles in Slovenia is The Otočec Castle. It sits in the middle of river Krka, on a tiny island. It’s connected to the river banks with two old wooden bridges, which makes you feel like you’ve time travelled back to the past. It’s located close to Novo mesto Located in the south-east part of Slovenia. The castle is now a boutique hotel and you can book the whole premises to host your wedding here.
11. zemono manor
This one is for the foodies – Zemono is a beautiful manor house in the Vipava valley, close to the border with Italy. The restaurant “Gostilna pri Lojzetu” recently got a Michelin star. The manor house sits on a tiny hill and offers 360 views all around the valley and towards Italy.
Now that you’ve found your perfect wedding venue, it’s time to book it. The most popular venues are booked solid up to 2 years in advance, so don’t wait too long. Go ahead and reach out to the venue and ask them for their open dates and pricing packages.
If you already have a date set, then it’s time for the next thing on the list: decide whether you will hire a wedding planner to organise everything for your wedding, or will you do it on your own.
Get a photographer you love!
Finding a great wedding photographer is probably the next thing on your to-do list. Remember, your wedding photos are the only thing that is left for decades to come (and your wedding rings too). So choosing a great photographer who’s work you love should be your priority.
