Slovenia - where the Alps meet the Meditteranean

We are Katja & Simon, destination wedding photographers and guides, based in Slovenia.

Slovenia is a scenic country with a fantastic location, right in the heart of Europe. It’s easily accessible from the neighbour countries: Italy, Austria and Croatia. Therefore planning your trip to Slovenia should be an easy task. Although Slovenia is a really small country, it is very diverse and offers a lot of spectacular places, that would make a perfect backdrop for your wedding in Slovenia.

1. LAKE BLED

Among hundreds of lakes in Slovenia, Lake Bled is for sure one of the most beautiful places. It’s also the #1 tourist attraction in Slovenia, so it’s often packed with tourists. But the lake is big enough and if you’re not afraid of a little bit of walking, it is possible to find a nice quiet spot for your vow exchange.

Lake Bled is famous for its island in the middle: you can hire a “pletna” boat to take you to the island, where you need to climb the 100 stairs (the tradition is that the groom has to carry the bride all the way to the top). It’s possible to get married in the Church of the Mother of God, where you will ring the wishing bell after the ceremony.

And if you prefer views from above, visit the Bled Castle, explore the history and enjoy the best view of the lake.

6. štanjel & THE KARST

Štanjel is a tiny town in the Karst region (about 20 min from the border to Italy), famous for it’s stone houses, tiny streets and the beautiful Ferrari Garden. The whole Karst region is the home of great wines and prosciutto, so you can be sure you won’t be starving.

7. THE SEASIDE

Slovenian coast is not big, but it offers some amazing places that might be perfect for your wedding.

Sitting within medieval walls, Piran is an old port town by the Slovenian coast. You can get a bit lost in the narrow streets, or hike up to the church on top of the hill to enjoy a beautiful view over the sea.

8. THE OTOČEC CASTLE

One of our favourite castles in Slovenia is The Otočec Castle. It sits in the middle of river Krka, on a tiny island. It’s connected to the river banks with two old wooden bridges, which makes you feel like you’ve time travelled back to the past. The castle is now a boutique hotel and you can book the whole premises to host your wedding here.

See how Australians hosted a destination wedding at Castle Otočec here.

9. ljubljana - the capital city

One of the best-kept secret in Europe is the charming city of Ljubljana. Wander around in the picturesque cobbled streets and enjoy your coffee on the banks of Ljubljanica river. Climb to the Ljubljana Castle for scenic views of the city and beyond or choose a different perspective and go for a boat ride on Ljubljanica river.

Wedding Day Timeline Tips

What's next?

Now that you’ve found your perfect wedding venue, it’s time to book it. The most popular venues are booked solid up to 2 years in advance, so don’t wait too long. Go ahead and reach out to the venue and ask them for their open dates and pricing packages.

If you already have a date set, then it’s time for the next thing on the list: decide whether you will hire a wedding planner to organise everything for your wedding, or will you do it on your own.
